If and only if you have a permanent residency in Japan, it’s basically the same as other Japanese but it takes time to process.
But there are caveats.
Are you married to a Japanese?
Do you have assets outside of Japan (tax issues)
Do you have family (heirs) living outside of Japan? (Inheritance tax issues)
Burial or cremation or sent back?
Rent (housing) renewal and if applicable (Same as for the Japanese) — but payment might be an issue due to account frozen so watch out!
Just note that processing non-Japanese takes more time than ordinary Japanese.
DON’T FORGET TO CONTACT YOUR EMBASSY!
There are other thins like returning your “Foreign residence permit card” within 14 days to the immigration. You can mail-in or bring it in person.
My ex-wife’s grandmother became German (from Japanese) and her son (my ex-wife’s father) became Japanese. As for my ex-wife’s grandmother’s funeral and paperwork, my ex-bro-in-law and I had quite a heavy duty paperwork and explanation to do with the immigration and the city hall since she was senile and lost all her papers.
Don’t let that happen to you.
